Our lives are a constant journey of change. The first time we rode a bike without training wheels. Going to the mall by yourself. Driving a car. Infant, toddler, child, pre-pubescent, teen, young adult.
There are stages in maturity as well- adult, middle-age, menopausal, elderly- a constant life cycle that never pauses. Most of this metamorphical existence occurs after we are born, but some of it, the earliest developments, occur in the womb.
Everything has a beginning- and an end. A fully formed infant doesn’t spring into existence- it starts with one.
One cell becomes two and it continues from there. Is that microscopic little bundle of cells a human being?
Is it a fish? A lizard? Is it nothing?
It is a human being, in the very beginning stage. A necessary unavoidable stage in the cycle. You and I were once that. Think of it this way- each of these describe a phase of human existence: teen, fetus, toddler, adult, embryo.
Those who refuse to acknowledge this have proposed other arbitrary points on the developmental timeline as an alternative beginning: Heartbeat. That is not the beginning. That is when the circulatory system begins to transition from the umbilical cord to the infants’ own system.
Viability? The crux of this argument would appear to be that if you pulled the baby from the womb at various points, would it survive? Well, it’s not supposed to. There is a normal time- full term- when the infant is “viable”. Any time short of that is, naturally, less viable.
Another- can it survive outside the womb? Can a three year old? A six year old? Not without assistance. I know some grown people who would struggle. That sort of subjective judgement is invalid and dangerous.
It is dangerous because inevitably we arrive at this point:

If this child is born female, at what point are all her eggs that will become her children
already ready and waiting in her womb. At what stage of fetal development is the next generation viable?? Once two live cells unite a human is created. I wanted to bring babies into the world when I was very young, and I knew I could never vote for terminating a pregnancy before I was a teenager.
